111 years of new love

BEIJING, May 27 — Pictured are newlyweds 111-year-old Kwong Wing Wah (right) and his 69-year-old bride Liao Ziying of Oakland, California who were married on May 16.

The pair have known each other for 20 years and said their love grew gradually.

Kwong, who was born December 15, 1899, said he came to the US from Taishan, Guangdong Province at age 12 or 13 after being "sold down the river" as a laborer.

He was detained for a month at Angel Island before being released and worked in the restaurant and construction industries in the Oakland and Sacra-mento areas throughout his life. He never married until now.

"He's kind and sincere and has taken good care of me and my kids," said his new wife, who was previously married. "He gives me that feeling of a lifetime of trust."

"I'm so happy. Finally, I have a family, a wife," Kwong told the 150 guests at their wedding banquet.

He attributes his longevity to two glasses of bitter melon water daily.
