Hundred-legged fortune

BEIJING, May 25 — Like a Biblical plague, more than 10,000 centipedes followed by hundreds of frogs and countless moths suddenly swept through the village of Shuanglou, Hunan Province from 7-9:30 pm on May 4.

But the centipedes proved to be a blessing for some villagers, such as Tan Hai'e who displays 205 of the creepy crawlies that she caught with chopsticks and drowned in a pot of water. The insects are believed by some to have medicinal value and worth more than 1 yuan apiece.

Another enterprising villager caught 220 of them. The reason for the invasion was cited as a "sudden change in the weather," and did not portend an earth-quake as some villagers feared.
